About 22:40, Orba Organics research centre, somewhere in the Pacific, Tuesday the 13th of April, 2055.

Now, I may have spend the day relaxing, but I'm rarely completely off guard, so I think I'm the only one who notices that the 'maintenance technicians' are suddenly looking more alert. They've also got their guns ready, but not to hand.

Anthony McGill, the head solo, stands up and calls for everybody's attention. He says that it's time for the party to end and for everyone to make their way back up to the main complex. A couple of people look like they're about to protest, but a glance from Anthony keeps them silent.

So we all quickly pack up and make our way back, leaving the fire to burn itself out. I ride one of the quads back, with Yuki sat behind me. During the trip, Yuki leans forward over my shoulder and tells me that the reason the party ended is that someone has been killed. I guess that she didn't leave her radio back in the chalet like I did.

All the way along the path, the solos keep a close eye on the column. That's helping keep everyone on edge, because they all know it's out of the ordinary. Once we all reach the complex, we head into the main building and congregate in the canteen.

The clock on the wall shows that it's just gone eleven when the announcement is made that the reason we're all here is that Janet has been killed. For a moment there is a stunned silence. That is broken by a few hushed whispers. Then, all at once, people start asking questions; How? When? Who? Why?

Anthony holds up his hands to quiet everybody down. He tells us what is known. Janet was found on the path down to the beach shortly after ten thirty. At the moment, it seems that she was killed by the same thing that has killed the chimps over the past couple of weeks. I ask whether they know, following the autopsy, what killed the chimps. He says the chimps died from a brain haemorrhage. It seems to have been caused by pressure to the skull, but there is no sign of any external trauma.

He then asks for volunteers to help them mount a watch overnight. Roland, 'Meerkat' and Shen all agree to help out. Yuki and I ask if we can observe Janet's autopsy and they seem happy to let us do so. The autopsy will take place about nine o'clock tomorrow morning, so we head off to get some rest.

Given the circumstances, I grab my guns and a blanket and make myself comfortable on the sofa in Yuki's chalet, so the two of us aren't alone in separate buildings. I awake from a fitful sleep shortly before eight in the morning to find Yuki already up and about. I go back to my chalet to freshen up and get changed, then I go back to get Yuki and we head over for breakfast.

Just as we finish, Maureen comes to find us and we go and prepare for the autopsy. We head into the autopsy room to find Dr Iain Plumber, who'll actually be doing the autopsy, already waiting for us.

Before we have a chance to begin, we're told over the radio that an AV-4 is approaching. No one is expected and it's not the AV-4 that was aboard the ship, as this one's olive green not blue. The running commentary over the radio continues until the AV-4 is hovering only about twenty feet up, just outside the main building...
