WFRP Character Foundry

Download  |   Quick Intro  |   Additions/bugfixes in latest version

Finally, after far, far too long my WFRP Character Foundry is available for download!

It's still far from finished, even though I've been working on it on and off for 3 years now. I just don't get the opportunity to sit down and spend several hours at a time working on it very often these days. But you don't want to listen to me harping on about how little spare time I've got, you just want to get your hands on the WFRP Character Foundry, so here it is:

Click here to download the WFRP Character Foundry for WFRP v1.
The download is a .zip file, approximately 400KBs in size, containing the single application file that should run under Windows 95 or later. Just unzip the file and put the foundry.exe file wherever you want it. Obviously, just run that file to use the WFRP Character Foundry. When you do run it, it will create a foundry.ini file in the same directory as foundry.exe, which it uses to store some settings.

And if you like my WFRP Character Foundry, take a look at my WFRP Name Generator too.

Quick Intro
Currently only 3 of the tabbed pages have anything useful on them. The first tab, Name & Stats, is fairly self-explanitory, but it also has the more descriptive items on it. Think of it as being the top third of the standard character sheet. The second useful tab is Skills. It's even more straightforward than the first and just lists the skills the character has already gained and those they have still to gain from their current career. The last useful tab at the moment is Miscellaneous and contains a variety of things, ranging from the character's movement rate to their birthday.

Hopefully, you'll find it easy to work out what everything does and means, as I haven't had time to write proper instructions, but here's a quick description of the main elements:
Generate Character - This is the more 'interactive' way of generating a character using the WFRP Character Foundry. You need to choose both the race and gender for the character before hitting the button (or selecting File|New|Character). When you click the button you'll see a dialogue box with some options on it, which allow you to pick whether certain details are generated for you, the age of the character, and whether random names, classes and careers are choosen.
Random NPC - The quickest way to generate a character. Just click the button (or select File|New|Random NPC) and go. All generation options are switched on and race, gender and age are randomly picked.
Print - A very simple print. It just literally prints the current page directly to your default printer. Obviously the Print button on the Name & Stats will only print that page. To print the other tabbed pages, select the page you want to print and then select File|Print on the menu bar.

You will quickly notice, that apart from the blank pages in the WFRP Character Generator, other fairly useful things are missing, such as the ability to load and save a character, or to print a character in a way that resembles a standard character sheet. Those are all things that are on my todo list and my intentions are signalled by the fact that the (disabled) menu items exist. I'll get to them when I have the time.

Version Additions/Bugfixes
0.3.0.52
  • Now looks for the configuration file (foundry.ini) in the same directory as the executable. No longer clutters up the default Windows directory.
  • 'Remembers' the screen position of the Character Options dialogue box.
  • Starting skills now generated when you pick the characters first career class if one is not generated automatically.
0.3.0.51
  • Fixed bug that made it appear that Artisans didn't gain any career skills.
  • Elves, Dwarves and Halflings get the Night Vision skill they deserve.
  • Fixed bug in title of characters saved as HTML pages.
0.3.0.47
  • Dwarven forenames and (parental) surnames now generated as per Dwarfs: Stone and Steel.
  • More Halfling names added using old English and Anglo-Saxon names for inspiration.
  • Initiates and clerics able to pick from the skills available to them according to their faith.
  • Fixed an obscure bug which meant that the range of ages that could be picked in the Character Generation Options dialogue box, was restricted to the ages valid for the last character generated, and not necessarily the race which had just been selected from the Race drop-down listbox.
  • Added ability to save a character to HTML and text files!

And one final note. A big thank you to Didz for his comments, feedback, ideas and patience while I've been working on the WFRP Character Foundry.
