Here are Ernst's brief scribblings about the trip...
Konistag 27th Vorhexen 2509 I.C.
We left the City through the South gate today at around mid-morning, with a hearty breakfast and a clear sky the only
doubts to enter my mind were regarding my travelling companions accompanying me on this errand. I know I should
accept my Master's decision on the matter of their trustworthiness but both of them are so strange and difficult to
understand, neither says much and both seem to be much happier since we left Nuln behind us. The human sent to be
my bodyguard is a rough looking individual and appears to be very able at handling trouble.
The elf hired to be my guide keeps himself to himself. I have a feeling that he only took the job for something to do.

We encountered an itinerant family today, at first I felt very tense but Fallow-Fan (my elf guide) has exceptional
eyesight and confirmed that they were harmless at a distance to which I could barely make out they were human. We
decided to stop and lunch with them to trade information about the roads and villages ahead, and to barter some food for
a large square of heavy canvas. Whilst conversing with the eldest son, (an amiable young man named Werner) I was
enlightened as to the reason they were travelling at this time of year. It appears that after a long illness, and longer
convalescence, Werner's father Bruno (a Blacksmith by trade) was unable to pay the Dunkelberg taxes for his smithy,
and as a result has been evicted, and has had his smithy confiscated to pay for his taxes and fines, the whole family are
heading for Nuln in a hope to start afresh. I have taken it upon myself to give a small sum of money to this family to aid
their chances of a decent future, and to this end I am 10 crowns the lighter.

It has taken us a week and a half to reach the foothills of the Grey Mountains. My best estimate is that we have travelled
about 120 miles.

Finally I have found enough Faxtoryll to return to Nuln. I have been searching the south slopes of these foothills for the
past eight days (only stopping to observe the "Witching Day") and will be glad when I can sleep in my own bed again. I
have dried a number of samples and also taken live plants although I'm not sure how well they will stand the trip to
Nuln.
