An Uncommon Type of Berry
The page of text that follows can be found in the library of the Temple of Verena in the city of Nuln. It records the brief background of an odd character that a couple of Initiates of Verena encountered when they were travelling near the town of Volgen early in the year of 2511 IC.
I grew up in the village of Furzen, in the The Moot's North Riding, in a small house above my
father's pharmacy business. For years my dear mother was clothes maker to many of those local and some
from farther away. She only makes clothes for a few friends these days as her hands are not as supple as
they once were. Being the oldest in the family, we've lately taken to calling her 'Elder' Berry, which she
takes with the warmth it is given. With my older brother, Harbull, taking over my father's pharmacy,
Huckle and I found ourselves without direction. Huckle went to search for his in religion, and became
an initiate at a temple in a nearby settlement. I went looking for adventure. Throughout my childhood I'd heard stories of the Dwarves in their Holds, valiantly fighting to keep their tunnels free from the goblin hoards. But I didn't think I ought to just head on over to the World's Edge Mountains to go see for myself. But I did want to see more of the world. Leaving my family behind, I traded my cooking skills for passage to Nuln on a passing river boat. I hadn't realised just how big a human city could be. Nuln was huge and I quickly found myself lost once I was there. As the night fell, I took a room at an inn. While having dinner, I got talking to one of the human patrons also dining. We got talking and I told him of the stories I'd heard of the Dwarves and how they'd excited me. He said he had just the job for me and that he could give me somewhere to stay as well. He left me an address and the following day I went to see him. He said he'd rent me a room and to save me worrying about paying the rent, if I worked for him, he'd just take board and lodgings out of my pay. It all sounded good to me. Then I asked about the job, and he described it as a simple collection job, but one where I could imagine myself a Dwarf fighting the good fight. Excitedly, I accepted the job. Then I found out what it really was. The good fight I would be fighting was helping keep Nuln free of disease. A noble cause indeed. However, the method, and the collection part of the job was rat catching in the city sewers. And after board and lodgings I was left with almost no money. It took well over a year to save up enough, but as soon as I had, I left. I would have been lost in the world again if I hadn't met a curious dwarf called Glin. He's got some unusual views about farming methods, but he's one of the few people to get my sense of humour, rather than just starring back blankly or letting out a barely audible groan, like most of the humans I've met. We're gonna travel together for a spell. Looks like I'm gonna see some interesting times... |
